I Bought My First Home At 25
At 25, young photographer Danny Ho purchased his first home.
Unlike many youngsters his age, it was his goal to buy his own home at a young age. He was able to do this because he was driven by a strong desire to be able to provide and be independent.
"Different people have different goals. Mine was to buy my own home."
Upon completing his studies, Danny returned to Sabah to pursue his career in photography. Currently, Danny runs MP Productions, a film production company.
Danny shared that he had started planning to buy his first home at 23. Since then, he has been working to strengthen his financial position to purchase his first home.
How did your parents react to you plan to buy a home?
"I wanted to achieve my goal on my own so I didn't tell my parents about my plan. I didn't want them to worry or burden them, but I was determined to do it."
What is the biggest problem that youngsters encounter when buying a house?
Danny expressed that many youngsters are provided with a home, thus making them have no worry or rush into buying one.
"I think many youngsters, when they think of purchasing a home, they're filled with so many concerns. I too, can say it wasn't an easy journey for me."
The question on finances and affordability is inevitable. Danny aims to focus on changing the minds of the parents especially.
"Many have this mindset that, just because you are in the arts industry, it will be difficult to achieve your goals or become successful. Nowadays, people can make money by having a career in media. "
It is more about mindset because although he did face some challenges during the purchase process, for him the hardest part wasn't buying the house, it was fixing his mindset to attain his goals.
Do you have any advice you would like to say to friends in their 20s and the same generation?
Danny advised that everyone should have a goal, especially in these times where costs of living is rising.
If this is your dream to invest in property, start and act NOW. Understanding the process and what is the necessary is your first step to start.
Danny encourages the young generation to believe that they too can purchase property.
"Don’t wait until you have enough money on hand, then only start. It's important that we prepare for the future."
